Isaiah 2:10-17

¹⁰^(A)Enter into the rock
    and hide in the dust
^(B)from before the terror of the Lord,
    and from the splendor of his majesty.
¹¹^(C)The haughty looks of man shall be brought low,
    and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled,
and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.

¹²^(D)For the Lord of hosts has a day
    against all that is proud and lofty,
    against all that is lifted up—and it shall be brought low;
¹³against all the ^(E)cedars of Lebanon,
    lofty and lifted up;
    and against all the ^(F)oaks of Bashan;
¹⁴against all ^(G)the lofty mountains,
    and against all the uplifted hills;
¹⁵against every high tower,
    and against every fortified wall;
¹⁶against all ^(H)the ships of Tarshish,
    and against all the beautiful craft.
¹⁷^(I)And the haughtiness of man shall be humbled,

I Will Sing of the Steadfast Love of the Lord

89 ^(B)I will sing of ^(C)the steadfast love of the Lord, forever;
    with my mouth I will make known your ^(D)faithfulness to all generations.
²For I said, ^(E)“Steadfast love will be built up forever;
    in the heavens ^(F)you will establish your ^(G)faithfulness.”
³You have said, “I have made ^(H)a covenant with my ^(I)chosen one;
    I have ^(J)sworn to David my servant:
⁴‘I will establish your ^(K)offspring forever,
    and build your ^(L)throne for all generations.’” Selah

⁵Let ^(M)the heavens praise your ^(N)wonders, O Lord,
    your faithfulness in the assembly of ^(O)the holy ones!
⁶For ^(P)who in the skies can be compared to the Lord?
    ^(Q)Who among the heavenly beings^[b] is like the Lord,
⁷a God greatly ^(R)to be feared in the council of ^(S)the holy ones,

Dead to Sin, Alive to God

6 What shall we say then? ^(A)Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? ²By no means! How can ^(B)we who died to sin still live in it? ³Do you not know that all of us ^(C)who have been baptized ^(D)into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? ⁴We were ^(E)buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as ^(F)Christ was raised from the dead by ^(G)the glory of the Father, we too might walk in ^(H)newness of life.

⁵For ^(I)if we have been united with him in ^(J)a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. ⁶We know that ^(K)our old self^[a] ^(L)was crucified with him in order that ^(M)the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. ⁷For ^(N)one who has died ^(O)has been set free^[b] from sin. ⁸Now ^(P)if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. ⁹We know that ^(Q)Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; ^(R)death no longer has dominion over him. ¹⁰For the death he died he died to sin, ^(S)once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. ¹¹So you also must consider yourselves ^(T)dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Not Peace, but a Sword

³⁴^(A)“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. ^(B)I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. ³⁵^(C)For I have come ^(D)to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. ³⁶^(E)And a person's enemies will be those of his own household. ³⁷^(F)Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. ³⁸And ^(G)whoever does not take his cross and ^(H)follow me is not worthy of me. ³⁹^(I)Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Rewards

⁴⁰^(J)“Whoever receives you receives me, and ^(K)whoever receives me receives him who sent me. ⁴¹^(L)The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. ⁴²And ^(M)whoever gives one of ^(N)these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”
